How to manage for collective creativity

This mosaic of four images was created earlier this year from data gathered by ESA’s Mars Express orbiter. Just right of center, you can see the Atlantis basin, an ancient impact crater whose walls have almost eroded away. Another sign of erosion is the halo of bumpy terrain, the Atlantis chaos, that surrounds the crater.

In 1932, Albert Einstein and his wife Elsa were granted a visa to visit the US, despite the misgivings of the American consul in Berlin about Einstein’s politics. A month later,
while the Einsteins were still in the US, the Nazi party came to power in Germany. The Einsteins returned to Europe — to  Belgium and then to Britain — but not to Germany, where he and and other Jews could no longer hold university positions. From Britain he worked to help his fellow Jewish scientists find work outside Germany.  In October 1933 he and Elsa left for the US, where he took up a position at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton.

In 185 AD astronomers in China documented the sudden appearance and gradual fading of a new star, the earliest supernova recorded. The composite image shows that supernova’s remnant, RCW 86, in different wavebands: x rays (blue and green) and infrared (yellow and red).

View of the Alps From Space
Expedition 42 Flight Engineer Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency (ESA) took this photograph of the Alps from the International Space Station, and posted it to social media on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014. She wrote, “I’m biased, but aren’t the Alps from space spectacular? What a foggy day on the Po plane, though! #Italy”
