Not all AI systems are equally intelligent or capable. Depending on their design and functionality, AI systems can be classified into two broad categories: Weak AI and Strong AI. These are also known by other names, but I will use weak and strong for now.

Weak AI, also known as narrow AI or specialized AI, is the type of AI that exists today and is designed to perform a specific task or a narrow set of related tasks. For example, weak AI can be used to play chess, recognize faces, translate languages, recommend products, or diagnose diseases. Weak AI can outperform humans on the specific tasks it is designed for, but it operates under far more constraints and limitations than even the most basic human intelligence. Weak AI does not have general intelligence or understanding of the world beyond its domain of expertise. It cannot adapt to new situations, learn from its own experience, or reason about its actions or goals. Weak AI is essentially a simulation of human intelligence, not a replication.

Strong AI, also known as general AI or artificial general intelligence (AGI), is the hypothetical type of AI that does not exist yet and is capable of learning and thinking as humans do. Strong AI would have human cognitive abilities, such as common sense, creativity, intuition, emotion, and self-awareness. Strong AI would be able to perform any task that a human can do, as well as tasks that humans cannot do. Strong AI would not be limited by a specific domain or function but would be able to understand and interact with any aspect of the world. Strong AI would not be a simulation of human intelligence, but a realization of it.

The main difference between weak AI and strong AI lies in their respective capabilities and limitations. Weak AI is designed to automate specific tasks, while strong AI is designed to mimic human intelligence. Weak AI can outperform humans on the specific tasks it is designed for, but it operates under far more constraints than even the most basic human intelligence. Strong AI refers to a hypothetical machine that exhibits human cognitive abilities. The existence of strong AI is still a matter of debate and speculation among researchers, philosophers, and even us programmers.

Weak AI and strong AI are two different types of artificial intelligence that differ greatly in their design and functionality. Weak AI is the type of AI that exists today and is designed to perform a specific task or a narrow set of related tasks. Strong AI is a hypothetical type of AI that does not exist yet and is designed to mimic human intelligence. The main difference between weak AI and strong AI lies in their respective capabilities and limitations. I know people love to watch movies with evil AI, sentient AI that wants to either kill or enslave humans, but the truth of the matter is, that weak AI is all that exists. For the doomsayers, who spread misinformation and fear AI, there is just zero evidence to support any of their claims.
